Thatch fire – Potterne

Date: 1st April, 2026

Time: 5.17pm

Description: We were called to High Street, Potterne at 5.17pm today (1 April) for a fire in the thatched roof of a public house. At the height of the incident, we had ten fire crews on scene - from Devizes (x2), Trowbridge (x2), Calne, Chippenham, Corsham, Royal Wootton Bassett, Warminster and Melksham -  together with a water carrier from Wilton, an incident command vehicle from Pewsey and the aerial ladder platform from Swindon - approx. 50 firefighters. Fire breaks are being created in the thatch to prevent fire spread, and two hose reel jets and a main jet are in use. The A360 through Potterne has been closed while the incident continues.

10pm - Fire breaks are in place either side of the central chimney, with thatch being stripped away from the roof. Relief crews are now being rotated in. The road remains closed.

5.45am, 2 April - Crews have now left the scene and the road has been reopened. The stop was at 1.17am. A reinspection will be held before the property is handed back.
