Service support for Moonraker Sportive

Date: 4th May, 2018

A cycling event being held in Devizes next month is being supported by Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Devizes Town Cycling Club has organised the Moonraker Sportive – its first – to raise money for Wiltshire Air Ambulance and the Fire Fighters Charity.

Club spokesman Tim Pigott said: “We’ve chosen these as we’re passionate about each – the Air Ambulance give us reassurance as we ride across remote Wiltshire, and we’re keen to support our friends from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, who are kindly letting us use a couple of stations as food stops, and we have a few firefighters and other FRS staff within the club.”

The Sportive is being held on Sunday 10 June, and the start point will be the Fire and Rescue Service training centre on Hopton Industrial Estate in Devizes.

Three routes are available: the family-friendly MellowMoonraker at 30 miles, the MidiMoonraker at 60 miles, and the MonsterMoonraker at 100 miles.

It’s the first time that Devizes Town Cycling Club has run such an event, and Tim Pigott said: “We are hugely grateful to our sponsors, Prolight Design and Finely Tuned Ride, and we’re hoping to attract as many riders as possible, all making donations to support our charities. The routes will be fully signed and there will be chipped timing, generous feed stations, mechanical support and medical cover so, if you’re a cyclist, why not sign up now?”

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Jim Mahoney, himself a keen cyclist, said: “Devizes Town Cycling Club gave great support to the 24 hour cycling challenge that we organised within the Service last year, so it’s great to be able to offer help back – especially as the Fire Fighters Charity is one of their chosen charities. It promises to be a great event, and hopefully will attract a large number of cyclists of all abilities.”
