Heath fires – Sandford

Time: 6.52pm

Description: We were called to the Sandford area, near Wareham, yesterday evening (28 March) for multiple heath fires. The first call was received at 6.52pm for an area of approx. 70m x 30m at Sandford Heath; the second was at 7.06pm to Great Ovens Holl, followed by another at Great Ovens Hill at 7.19pm. Multiple small 4x4 appliances and heavy off-road appliances, the Unimog from Wareham and water carriers were mobilised between the incidents. The largest fire was at Great Ovens Hill, covering an area of approx. 300m x 200m, with four areas affected within that. Firefighting had ceased by 1am this morning (29 March) although crews will be returning this morning to check for hot spots. The cause of the fires is under investigation.
