This year marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied forces mounted the largest amphibious invasion the world has ever witnessed.
On 6 June 1944, Operation Overlord saw over 5,000 ships and landing craft set down more than 130,000 troops on five Normandy beaches in an action that would bring about the liberation of north-west Europe from Nazi occupation.
Villages, towns, cities and organisations of all sizes are being asked to mark this anniversary by lighting a beacon. Full details can be found at www.d-day80beacons.co.uk
There is also a detailed event guide, which can be downloaded by anyone planning to light a beacon.
Beacons across the UK will be lit at 9.15pm on Thursday 6 June 2024. If you are holding such an event, please let us know as soon as possible by calling us on 0306 799 0019 or completing our online form.
Safety advice
Event coordinators planning a public or private event for the 80th anniversary of D Day MUST:
- Inform us if you are planning on having a beacon/bonfire, fireworks or an event that will attract a large crowd.
- Inform other emergency services well in advance about the type of event you are planning.
- Make sure to undertake any risk assessments required and ensure everyone involved is happy and familiar with your plans. Consider the access and egress of fire engines.
- In the event of dry weather, high winds, and a heightened wildfire risk on the day of the event, please carefully consider scaling back initial plans where appropriate.
- Choose a safe location for your beacon, away from buildings, trees and flammable objects.
- Have a water supply nearby, and keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher to hand. It’s better to be prepared than risk a dangerous situation.
- Never leave a fire unattended; always ensure that someone responsible monitors the fire.
- Keep children and pets safe, make sure they are supervised and establish a clear boundary to prevent them from getting too close.
