Three Peaks team aims to make history

Date: 13th June, 2018

A group from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is aiming to make a bit of history at the end of this month by completing a famous endurance challenge in full fire kit.

The Fire Service Three Peaks Challenge is holding its 50th, and final, event on 28-29 June, where participants aim to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon – plus travel between each – in less than 24 hours.

A DWFRS team won the challenge last year and four of them have decided to take part again, this time in fire tunics, leggings and helmets, while also carrying breathing apparatus sets.

Steve Taylor is one of those taking on the challenge, and he said: “The Three Peaks event has raised thousands of pounds for the Fire Fighters Charity over the years and we thought it would be good to take part in the very last one, while trying something that has never been done before. We know of people who have ascended individual peaks in fire kit, but no-one has ever taken on the main challenge – to be fair, there’s probably a very good reason for that, but we’ve trained hard and will give it our best shot.”

Steve, who is a Crew Manager based in Trowbridge, will be joined in fire kit by Bob Waller (Salisbury fire station), Jason Nightingale and Sam Legg-Bagg (both general trainers at the Devizes training centre).

Phil Peaple and Andy Mitchell (both Devizes training centre) will be the support walkers, carrying other kit and lots of water, while Simon Green (Devizes training centre and an on-call firefighter in Pewsey) and Dave Evans (Salisbury fire station) will share the driving, navigating, cooking and other support functions.
