Recycling centre fire, Pewsey

Date: 9th June, 2023

08/06/23

4pm – We were called at 14:44 today with reports of a fire at a recycling centre near Pewsey.  Fire engines from Pewsey, Devizes, Stratton, Westlea, Salisbury, Trowbridge and Swindon are in attendance along with support from Hampshire FRS (Andover) and Oxfordshire FRS (Newbury and Hungerford).  This is a large fire with the scrapyard well alight and firefighting is ongoing.  There is a significant smoke plume which is heading towards Pewsey Village so are advising local residents to keep doors and windows closed and stay indoors where possible.

5.45pm – 10 fire engines are on scene at this incident, alongside three water carriers and one aerial ladder platform (approx 60 firefighters). We anticipate firefighters will continue dealing with this incident into this evening. We are working with our partners across the local resilience forum to bring this incident to safe conclusion. There is a road closure in place on B3087 between Pewsey and Burbage. This will remain closed for the duration of this incident.
Although the smoke plume is reducing, residents of Pewsey are asked to keep their windows and doors closed at this time.

8pm – As previous update, 10 fire engines, three water carriers and one aerial ladder platform remain in attendance at this incident. Firefighters are using the aerial ladder platform as a water tower alongside multiple main lines and hose reels to bring the fire under control. Firefighters will remain on scene at this incident overnight although our attendance will reduce dramatically. We continue to work with our partners and the road closure remains in place.

09/06/23

6.30am – Firefighters continue to deal with the incident this morning. Approx 20 firefighters are using the aerial ladder platform and the high volume pump to extinguish the fire. The B3087 remains closed.

1pm – Good progress has been made with the fire now mostly extinguished. Unaffected waste is currently being moved offsite.

8.30pm – Crews have continued to monitor and dampen down hotspots throughout the afternoon – a single crew from Pewsey will continue this overnight and a reinspection will be carried out in the morning. The road closure has now been lifted.
