Places available for young people’s development course

Date: 17th May, 2017

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service still has a few places available on a half term course aimed at young people from the West Dorset area who are aged between 12 and 17.

SPARC is a personal development programme that uses the skills used by firefighters to develop teamwork, communication and problem solving, while also building on confidence and self-esteem.

The course – which is being held at Dorchester Community Fire Station – starts on Tuesday 30 May and finishes on Saturday 3 June, and it has been part-funded by the Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner for Dorset.

Youth Intervention Coordinator Marianne Gerety explained: “SPARC takes the day-to-day training of firefighters and uses it as a positive activity to develop a range of skills in young people. Over the week, they will experience running hose and using ladders, search & rescue, dam building and even dealing with road traffic collision scenarios, before putting on a display of what they have learned at a pass-out parade in front of friends and family.”

To apply for one of the remaining places, or to refer a young person, please contact Marianne Gerety on 01722 691299 / 07798 580520 or email [email protected]
