Charity car wash supports marathon effort

Date: 28th February, 2017

A Pewsey firefighter is running the London Marathon in April to raise money for a cancer charity.

The race on 23 April will be the first marathon tackled by Martin Lay, an on-call Crew Manager at Pewsey fire station.

He hopes to raise at least £1,750 for Children with Cancer, and his fundraising will be boosted by a charity car wash at the fire station in North Street on Saturday 4 March between 9am and 4pm.

Taking part in the world-famous event fulfils a long-held ambition of Martin’s, who is now juggling his training with his fire service commitments and looking after his two young children.

He said: “I’ve been entering the ballot for years to get a place at the London Marathon, but with no luck. When I decided to go down the route of getting a charity place, I decided to focus on something that helps children – thankfully my two are healthy, but I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for families whose children are ill. This way, I get to do something I’ve always wanted to do, and a really good cause gets some much needed funds.”

Although Martin hasn’t run a marathon before, he has competed in several half Ironman events. To support his fundraising, please visit www.virginmoneygiving.com/MartinLay
