Description: 11am update, 24 July: We were called to Hurn recycling transfer station on Chapel Lane, Christchurch at 11.26am yesterday (23 July) for a fire involving a large quantity of recycling within a building.
Multiple crews were on scene throughout the day, with firefighters supported by site staff and BCP Council representatives. The fire is very deep seated within the waste stack, so the stack needed to be broken down and removed from the building.
A watching brief was maintained overnight, and we are again actively firefighting this morning, with three fire crews and a water carrier on scene. A telehandler from Hampshire & Isle of Wight FRS will be used to move the recycling.
There is still some smoke in the local area, and local residents should keep doors and windows closed if concerned.
5pm update: We still have three fire crews and a telehandler on scene, and expect to continue moving waste and damping it down until later this evening. A one-pump watching brief will again be maintained overnight, and we expect to return tomorrow morning with the same capability as today. While firefighting continues, there will still be some smoke in the local area, and local residents should keep doors and windows closed if concerned.
9am update, 25 July: Three appliances are in attendance this morning to continue working with site staff to continue moving waste and damping down.
4pm update: The fire has now been extinguished, with tonnes of recyclables moved over the last couple of days. The fire was very deep seated within the waste stack, so the only way to ensure it was fully out was to break down the stack and move the affected materials outside for damping down. Our thanks go to Hampshire & Isle of Wight FRS for their telehandler and support with the on-site loader. Our stop came in at 2.53pm and we will be handing the site back to BCP Council very shortly.
