Description: 5.15pm update - We were called to Foundry Lane, Chippenham following reports of a strong smell of gas. Two crews from Chippenham, one from Calne and one crew from Melksham initially attended while investigations were carried out to find the cause of the smell. This was traced to a building site where a gas main had been damaged by a digger.
Engineers from Wales & West Utilities are now on scene and are working to suppress the leak ahead of a full repair being undertaken. We have scaled back our attendance to two crews from Chippenham, who are supporting scene safety.
Local people are advised to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution. There may be some traffic disruption in the Foundry Lane area while the incident is ongoing.
8pm update - Firefighters left the scene of this incident at approx 6.45pm as it was handed over to the gas board. A re inspection will take place at approx 9pm.
9.30pm update - The incident has now been handed over to Wales and West Utilities who will be working through the night to fix the leak.
