Roof fire – Commercial premises

Time: 19:16

Description: At 7.16pm this evening, firefighters were called to reports of a roof fire in a commercial premises in Old Town, Swindon. There are currently 10 fire engines dealing with this incident (approx 50 firefighters). Crews are using hose reels, breathing apparatus and main lines to bring the fire under control. The aerial ladder platform from Swindon is also in attendance at this incident and is being used to strip roof tiles and ascertain fire spread. We are working with colleagues from Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue and Wiltshire Police to deal with this incident.

Local residents are being asked to keep windows and doors closed. People are being asked to avoid the area as we also expect some travel disruption as a result of this incident. Firefighters will be on scene into the night dealing with this fire.

Update 9:05pm - the fire is now believed to be extinguished and the incident is scaling down to four fire engines (approx 20 firefighters).

Update 12:27am - firefighters have left the scene. The area has been cordoned off by the local authority. Firefighters will return at 8.15am to reinspect and check for hotspots. A fire investigation is now underway.

Update 10:00am - A re-inspection took place at 9:00am today to check for hotspots. No further fire detected, incident closed and now handed over to responsible person at premises.
