Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is the enforcing authority for the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Whilst we carry out audits and inspections on commercial premises, we also engage with business through our crews who carry out Business Fire Safety Checks.
Business Fire Safety Checks are carried out in small premises to increase fire safety awareness and to help business owners and managers meet their legal fire safety responsibilities. Fire safety advice will be given, based on the crews observations, to help you provide an adequate level of fire safety.
What are the benefits of having a Business Fire Safety Check?
This check provides the following:
- An opportunity to have a discussion about your current fire safety arrangements to support your own identification of the risks and hazards from fire.
- Free access to fire safety guidance and assistance through our website.
- It enables Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service to capture operational risk information such as gas cylinders and hazardous materials that may be stored on the premises.
Who will be carrying out Business Fire Safety Checks?
Our operational firefighters are trained to conduct Business Fire Safety Checks. They have the knowledge and skills to give fire safety advice and can signpost businesses for more information or help, if required.
What to expect during the Business Fire Safety Check?
During the check, the operational fire crew will discuss ten areas of fire safety with you. To facilitate the process, it’s helpful to have fire safety documentation available, such as:
- Premises fire risk assessment and the evacuation procedure
- Testing and maintenance records
- Staff fire safety training
The crew will take a walk around your business with you, where they will be looking at fire safety measures and asking questions such as:
- Who is the Responsible Person?
- What is your premises used for?
- What measures are in place to reduce the risk of fire?
- What measures are in place for fighting fires?
- How is a fire detected?
- What happens in the event of a fire?
In advance of the BFSC, you may wish to take a look at the making your premises safe from fire leaflet.
How long will a Business Fire Safety Check take?
Roughly an hour, depending on the size of your premises and what points are raised during the check.
Please note: A BFSC does not fulfil your legal obligations under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 or replace the requirement to provide a written fire risk assessment. Where crews identify serious fire safety concerns, a referral will be made to our Fire Safety team.
