How volunteering helped me – Darryl’s story

I have been a volunteer with Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service for two years now.

I have always had an interest in the Fire Service as my uncle was senior fire officer with the MoD, but I didn’t have the confidence to apply for any positions.

During the summer of 2016, my Nan unfortunately had a kitchen fire and crews from the local station attended to deal with it.

Because of the fire, my Nan had a visit from the Safe & Well team who carried out a Safe & Well check, and they chatted to my Nan about measures to take to stop further fires happening in her home.

This was my first interaction with Dorset & Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service. The team were so friendly and gave our family a great deal of advice and support to keep my Nan as safe as possible.

This got me thinking and I took the plunge and applied to become a volunteer.

I have really enjoyed volunteering and have been involved in lots of different events.

My experience as a volunteer has enabled me to grow in confidence and I have achieved one of my goals in becoming an operational on-call firefighter based at Swindon.
