Advice for people living with dementia

Dementia is a National Health priority in the UK, as the number of people living with the condition continues to increase. Dementia is also a substantial factor in increasing the risk of injury or death from fire in the home.

Fire and Rescue Services across the UK are aware of the link between serious home fires and the elderly, especially those with mobility and memory loss health needs.

Our Safe and Well Advisors have attended Dementia Awareness Sessions so they have knowledge of different types of dementia and the signs and symptoms to be aware of. By understanding the person and their individual situation, we can discuss with the person and their families or carers, the risks within the home and advise on ways to keep the person living safer in their home for longer.

It has also been identified that the early use of Assistive Technology or Telecare is very beneficial for people living with dementia. Having a simple careline linked to your smoke alarms can make the difference between a small kitchen fire and a fire fatality.
