Cycling event being held for Fire Fighters Charity

Date: 21st March, 2018

A special cycle sportive is being held at the end of May to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity.

Organised by Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service’s cycling section, the event on Sunday 27 May is open to anyone who wants to take part.

Starting from Shaftesbury fire station at 9am, the ‘no frills’ sportive offers two routes, each incorporating the beautiful countryside of Dorset and Wiltshire.

Route one is approximately 30 miles of fairly flat riding, with one or two ups and downs; route two covers approximately 75 miles over a combination of flat and undulating roads, and a few more ups and downs!

Both routes will have feed stations, recovery and mechanical assistance, and there won’t be the added pressure of being timed.

Firefighter Lee McCumiskey, one of the organisers, said: “Although the event is being run by Fire and Rescue Service personnel, it is open to anyone who enjoys cycling and would like to get involved. We’re limiting entries to 100 riders to keep it safe and enjoyable for everyone, and the entry fee is £15 per person. Half of that will cover costs, and half will go to the Fire Fighters Charity – we’ve also got support from Cycle Paths of Poole, and we are very grateful to them for that.”

It is also hoped that a former Tour de France ‘King of the Mountains’ winner will be taking part.

If you would like to get involved, please email Lee at [email protected] or Paul Ticehurst at [email protected]
