Maiden Newton Fire Station is throwing open its doors this Sunday (14 October) to celebrate sixty years of firefighters serving the community from the Bull Lane site.
Running from 12noon until 4pm, the free admission event will feature a number of different drills and demonstrations from the local crew, including a dramatic display of what happens when a chip pan catches fire.
A range of emergency service vehicles will be on display, and visitors will be able to look around the fire station and find out more about what being a firefighter involves. There will also be a range of stalls, selling teas, cakes and hot refreshments.
Watch Manager Andy Elliott said: “The proceeds will go towards the restoration of Maiden Newton’s first ‘Fire Engine House’ and hand pump, which date back to 1800. We want to restore both to enable us to open them to the public as a mini museum of firefighting in Maiden Newton, but we need to raise about £10,000 to achieve this.”
He added: “Anyone interested in being an on-call firefighter in Maiden Newton can also come along and have a chat with any of the crew to find out whether it’s for them. We’re hoping for good weather and lots of people through the doors!”
