Janine’s marathon effort for charity

Date: 10th March, 2017

A Bournemouth firefighter is organising a number of events to support her fundraising efforts in this year’s London Marathon.

Janine McCumiskey, who is part of Blue Watch at Redhill Park fire station, is tackling the world famous race on 23 April in aid of Round Table Children’s Wish, a national charity based in Bournemouth.

It’s the first time that Janine has taken on a marathon – in fact, the furthest she’d ever run prior to this was 11 miles – and training is now well underway, alongside her shifts at work.

Two fundraising events have been organised at Redhill Park fire station, with proceeds split between Children’s Wish and the Fire Fighters Charity.

The first will be a car wash on Saturday 25 March, between 10am and 2pm, and the second will be a coffee morning on Monday 10 April between 10am and 3pm.

Janine is running alongside her friend Hayley and they have also organised a fundraising quiz night, to be held on Tuesday 28 March at Penn Central, Penn Hill Avenue, Poole – time and cost to be confirmed.

With only weeks to go until the race, Janine is focused on both her training and raising money for her chosen charity. She said: “Having never run a marathon before, it’s been quite a challenge to build up my stamina and also get the right mindset to be able to run for several hours non-stop. Training is going to plan and we’re on target, which is really good, so I can now focus on fundraising as well.

“Round Table Children’s Wish is a great charity to support, and it’s based locally, so I’m hoping that people will get behind us and get involved in the events we’re holding. Both the car wash and coffee morning will be for donations, and there will be the chance to look around the fire station, find out more about what we do and even ask about fire safety at home!”
