Firefighters take on new charity challenge

Date: 23rd August, 2016

A group of firefighters from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service are looking to complete a hat-trick of fundraising challenges next month.

Having walked 22 miles along the Kennet & Avon Canal in full fire kit in 2013, then walking up (and back down!) Mount Snowdon in full fire kit last year, 12 members of the Corsham crew have signed up for another trek.

On 10 September, they will be tackling the 26 mile Jurassic Coast walk around Portland and along to Lulworth Cove – again in full fire kit.

Having raised £5,087.25 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Fire Fighters Charity in 2013, and £4,252.29 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance in 2015, the beneficiary of this year’s challenge is Julia’s House Hospice.

The charity is already established in Dorset and has started building a new children’s hospice in Devizes, to support families across Wiltshire.

Crew Manager Keith Shackleford said: “Although these fire kit challenges are hard work, they are also great fun and we’re really proud of the money we’ve raised in the past. Since April, the Fire and Rescue Service has covered both Dorset and Wiltshire, the same area served by Julia’s House, and it’s a charity that we all want to support.”

The charity has asked every trekker to raise at least £200, which covers the cost of 6.5 hours of care for a poorly child and respite for an exhausted parent.
