Countdown underway for Jurassic Skyline charity abseil

Date: 5th February, 2018

Thirty intrepid fundraisers will be abseiling down the Jurassic Skyline tower in Weymouth on Sunday 4 March in support of five charities.

The event is being led by firefighters from Weymouth fire station, working in partnership with the Jurassic Skyline’s owners.

Firefighter Justin Rolls is organising the challenge, along with technical rescue colleagues on White Watch. He said: “Lots of people have enjoyed the view from the gondola; however, being allowed to abseil from the tower is limited to a select few, which is why we are working with Merlin Entertainments to provide this amazing fundraising opportunity. We’ve asked everyone taking part to raise a minimum of £200 for our chosen charities before the day of the abseil, and they can also raise money for their own causes on top of that if they wish!”

The challenge will benefit the Fire Fighters Charity, SafeWise, Merlin’s Magic Wand, the Sea Life Trust and Julia’s House Hospice.

On the day, all of the firefighters and volunteers running the challenge will be giving up their time whilst off duty, and Merlin Entertainments is providing the use of the Jurassic Skyline free of charge.

In addition, Dorset Abilities Group will be opening up their base at the Old Ferry Terminal building to provide toilets, a rest area and light refreshments for those taking part.

Justin said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who is supporting the challenge, it’s the first time we have done something like this so having so much help from so many people is wonderful. It promises to be a great day, as long as the weather is kind!”

Should the conditions make it impossible to run the challenge on 4 March, it will be postponed to the following Sunday.

While each individual abseiler is raising money in their own right, there is also a central donations page for anyone wanting to support the challenge – please visit https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/jurassicskylineabseil
