Charity ladder climb in Swanage this Saturday

Date: 22nd October, 2018

Swanage firefighters are looking to climb Mount Everest this Saturday (27 October) – without even leaving the town!

Together with colleagues from elsewhere in Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, the team will be taking on a ladder climb challenge equivalent to the 8,848m height of the famous mountain.

Local firm S&D Scaffolding Services is providing the structure to support the climb, and the Mowlem Theatre is providing the venue.

Phil Burridge, officer in charge at Swanage fire station, said: “We’re hoping to raise as much money as possible for two very good causes. Firstly, we’re supporting former firefighter Nick Dampney, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis several years ago and, unfortunately, his condition has got progressively worse. He’s trying to raise £20,000 to pay for advanced treatment in Moscow, which will hopefully help him. I used to work with Nick in fire safety, so I’m keen we try and help.

“We’re also raising money for the Fire Fighters Charity, a fantastic organisation that helps both uniformed and non-uniformed personnel of all Fire & Rescue Services across the country. The climb is due to start at 10am and will go on until the target has been reached!”

Anyone in and around Swanage on Saturday is asked to go along to the Mowlem Theatre, show some support and throw some money in the donation buckets – alternatively, donations can be made on-line via https://www.gofundme.com/ladder-climb
