Charity car wash at Swindon fire station this Saturday

Date: 1st August, 2022

A charity car wash is being held in Swindon this Saturday (6 August) in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity.

Firefighters will be washing cars – and any other vehicles! – between 9am and 1pm at the fire station on Drove Road, in support of a fundraising challenge by Watch Manager Dan Fry.

Dan is busy training to run at the London Marathon in October and, not only will it be his first ever race over this distance, he will be doing it in 20kg of fire kit!

He’s already run half marathons at Kew Gardens and on a treadmill, again in fire kit, and has raised over £3,500. This has exceeded his original target, and he’s now hoping to achieve at least £5,000.

As part of this, Dan has been invited to run around the pitch in fire kit during half time at Swindon Town FC’s home game on 20 August, and there will also be collection buckets for people to make donations.

Having secured his London Marathon place through the Fire Fighters Charity, Dan decided to raise as much money as possible for them. “I’d read about how the Charity’s income had plummeted during the pandemic, as fundraising events had to be cancelled. I know so many people who have benefited from the Charity’s support, it just made sense to try and help them in return. I did a half marathon in fire kit last year as part of a group for another cause, and it gave me the bug to do more!”

The Fire Fighters Charity offers specialist, lifelong support for all serving and retired members of the UK fire services community, covering mental, physical and social wellbeing. It is reliant on donations to meet the cost of operating its services to support over 55,000 beneficiaries.
