Meet Millie

Hi, my name is Millie; I’m 22, and I live in Dorset with my boyfriend. I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, and summer nights down the beach or in a beer garden. I also like to keep fit by playing netball and any other sport where there’s an element of winning (I’m quite competitive…)!

I’m currently an on-call firefighter in the process of completing my development stage. I joined Wareham fire station last year and I’ve loved every second so far.

I also work in our HR Resourcing & Workforce Planning Team, where I predominantly deal with wholetime and Fire Control recruitment as well as our promotions process.

I thoroughly enjoy having a dual contract as it enables me to have a real insight into both the Corporate and operational sides of the Service.

DWFRS has opened so many doors for me in terms of access to training, meeting new people and getting to know my community better. I have picked up an incredible amount of skills in the short time I have been here, and I’ve been supported by the Service all the way.

When I first signed up to be a firefighter, I had very little confidence in my ability to pass the recruitment day, let alone carry out all the tasks expected of you at incidents. Despite the countless offers of support made by DWFRS, I was too shy to take them up as I knew I wouldn’t know anyone at events, and I figured it would be solely men who I would struggle to relate to or form friendships with.

So much so, I made my boyfriend sign up with me so that I wouldn’t go through the recruitment process alone. Had I have not had my boyfriend helping me train for the recruitment day and then supporting me throughout my development courses, I would never have signed up.

Because of this, I would really like to offer my support to those who feel they could benefit from a more personal approach or need a confidence boost.
