Weymouth Fire Cracker event goes online

Date: 9th December, 2020

A popular feature in Weymouth’s Christmas build-up for the last few years has been the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service Fire Cracker at the town’s fire station.

As with so many other festive events, the open day has had to be cancelled for this year due to the pandemic restrictions, but an online event is being held on Saturday (12 December) to raise funds for the Fire Fighters Charity and Julia’s House Hospice.

Between 11am and 12noon, a series of videos will be posted on Weymouth fire station’s Facebook page – @DWFRSWeymouthFireStation – showing various scenarios that can happen over the festive period, together with rescue activities featuring Santa and fun for the little ones, in the shape of a Glue & Make and a safety story.

Crew Manager Luke Howell, one of the organisers, said: “While we would have loved to welcome local people to the fire station as we usually do, the current situation means it’s just not possible. However, we wanted to do something that would help people stay safe, and raise some money for two good causes, so all of the watches have contributed. We hope people enjoy the films and are able to make a small donation!”

Amongst the scenarios featured are rescue from height, a kitchen fire, an electrical fire, what happens when a Christmas tree catches alight, rescue from a well, and a road traffic collision.

All of the films have been compiled into a single video and this will be on Weymouth’s Facebook page on Sunday. At the same time, it will be added to the DWFRS YouTube channel – @DWFireRescue – for anyone who can’t access Facebook.
