Date: 23rd April, 2019
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for young people to join their next Fire Cadet programme in Trowbridge from September 2019.
The aim of Fire Cadets is to support the development of young people by providing a positive role model and giving them opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities.
Youth Intervention Coordinator Christine Sharma said: “This will be the third cohort of cadets at Trowbridge Fire Station and it’s a fabulous opportunity for young people between the ages of 13 and 18 to take part in a unique and rewarding scheme. It’s both fun and challenging and it gives cadets the chance to learn new personal and social skills.”
The programme, linked to the National Fire Cadet model, is delivered by firefighters and volunteers and lasts for 38 weeks within the academic year of 2019/20. Drills take place every Wednesday evening (excluding school holidays) and will involve practical and theory elements that lead to accredited certificates along with community based social action projects.
The course is designed to be fun, but it also challenges and develops the participants by getting them to:
- Work co-operatively within a team environment
- Gain self-esteem and self-confidence and improve communication skills
- Adopt a new set of personal values
- Understand the importance of safety issues and the consequences of anti-social behaviour
- See the advantages of improving their learning and performance
Benefits to the participants include:
- Team building skills
- Portfolio of achievements
- Increased fire and safety awareness
- Development of practical skills
- Community awareness
- Increased levels of fitness
The programme always attracts a lot of interest, so there will be an application and interview process with a short assessment. If you are interested, please register an expression of interest by emailing Christine Sharma ([email protected]) before Friday 10 May and an application form will be emailed out to you.
