Fire in thatched property

Date: 10th April, 2018

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is currently tackling a fire in the thatched roof of a detached property in the village of Ham, near Marlborough.

After receiving a 999 call at 3.12pm this afternoon (10 April), Fire Control mobilised crews from Marlborough, Westlea, Swindon, Cricklade, Ludgershall and Malmesbury, and requested support from neighbouring Services. Royal Berkshire FRS has sent appliances from Newbury (two), Lambourn and Reading Whitley Wood, while crews from Eastleigh and Whitchurch have been sent by Hampshire FRS.

The aerial appliance from Swindon, water carriers from Royal Wootton Bassett and Andover, and an incident command unit from Stratton are also in attendance.

The fire has been contained to the affected property and most of the occupants’ possessions have been salvaged with the help of the local community. The occupants have escaped without injury.

People living in Ham are advised to keep doors and windows closed while the fire is still burning, due to significant amounts of smoke. The road to Buttermere is currently closed due to the number of fire vehicles in attendance.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
