Devizes firefighter Paul Vickery is taking part in the Marie Curie Cancer Care Swimathon next month to raise money for the charity.
Paul will be swimming 2.5km at Melksham Blue Pool on the afternoon of Sunday 9 April in support of the national fundraiser – the distance is the equivalent of 1.6 miles and the furthest he has swum previously is one mile.
He said: “I lost both my parents to cancer, so Marie Curie is a charity that’s very close to my heart and I hope to raise as much money as I can for them. Although the distance is a lot further than I have tackled before, I’m confident that I can manage it as long as I pace myself – but it will be a challenge, and knowing I can make a difference to such a brilliant charity will help me get to the end.”
While the swim is for charity, Paul is also running the Devizes half marathon on the same day, although that’s just for his own satisfaction!
