A fire investigation will be carried out later today (25 January) to find the cause of a blaze in a block of flats in Trowbridge.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to a terraced property, comprising of four flats, in Woolpack Meadows at 5.17am this morning. The fire was located in a first floor flat, and had spread into the roof.
Four fire crews – two from Trowbridge, one from Westbury and one from Melksham – tackled the blaze, supported by a crew and aerial appliance from Bath.
Two people were rescued by firefighters from the other first floor flat, while a third was brought to safety from a ground floor flat. All three were checked over at the scene by paramedics from South Western Ambulance Service, and one has been taken to hospital as a precaution due to smoke inhalation.
Volunteers from the British Red Cross emergency response team based at Swindon fire station are now at the scene to support the occupants of the flats who have been displaced by the incident, as the whole building has been affected by smoke.
Wiltshire Council’s highways team went to the scene earlier to grit the roads, after water run-off from the firefighting operation started to freeze.
Nine breathing apparatus wearers, two hose reel jets and a main jet have been used to deal with the fire, which has now been brought under control. Crews have started to leave the scene, and an aerial appliance from Swindon has been brought in to replace the one from Bath.
It is expected that an attendance will be maintained for some hours, both for damping down and to support the fire investigation.
