Fire at Westbury processing plant

Date: 30th June, 2016

A fire at a chemical recycling and disposal business in Westbury is being tackled by Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service this morning (30 June).

Firefighters were called to the Waste Matters site in Brook Lane at 9.28am and six fire engines were mobilised, from Westbury, Trowbridge, Warminster (two), Frome and Melksham.

They have been supported by the heavy rescue unit from Trowbridge, a water carrier from Wilton and an incident command vehicle from Devizes.

The fire has been contained within a processing building, and has affected a number of chemical drums.

As of 11.15am, the fire had been extinguished and firefighters are continuing to cool and make the scene safe.

The Service is also working with colleagues from Wiltshire Police, Wiltshire Council, South Western Ambulance Service, Public Health England and the Environment Agency to ensure that there is no risk to the public.

Brook Lane and Stephenson Road have been closed and, as a precaution, local businesses and people have been warned to stay indoors and keep windows and doors shut.

Anyone concerned that they may have been affected by the smoke plume should call NHS 111 or seek other medical advice.
