Firefighters rescue a family of five following a flat fire in Bournemouth

Date: 1st October, 2019

Time: 11.55pm

Description: At 11.55pm yesterday (01st October) our control room received several calls reporting a property fire in a flat in Haviland Road, Bournemouth. The control operator handling the call gave fire survival guidance to the caller for several minutes enabling the family to remain safe before the arrival of crews. Firefighters from Springborne, Redhill Park, Westborne and Christchurch (approx. 30 firefighters) were mobilised to this incident. Firefighters rescued five people from the affected block of flats, two adults and three children. The casualties were treated and a transported to hospital by our colleagues from South West Ambulance Service. Station Manager Ant Bholah, who attended this incident, said: “Our firefighters did a great job in swiftly searching for and rescuing five people from the property. Firefighters extinguished a fire in a bedroom using eight sets of a breathing apparatus, one main line and two hose reels. The fire was contained to one flat within the block. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.” This fire has occurred during the National Fire Chief Council (NFCC) Home Safety Week, which is running from 1st – 7th October. Firefighters across the country are reminding the public to ensure they have working smoke alarms, which are tested regularly and are appropriate for their family needs. More information about Home Safety Week can be found on the NFCC website - https://www.nationalfirechiefs.org.uk/Home-Safety-Week-2019
