Field fire – Cheselbourne

Date: 15th July, 2019

Time: 15:48

Description: At 15:48 this afternoon, Fire Control received a call to a field on fire involving crops which was spreading fast due to the wind on top of the hill, and possibly overhead power lines also involved. Initially, 2 fire engines from Dorchester Fire Station were mobilised, along with an off road 4x4 from Bere Regis and a Water Carrier from Yeovil Fire Station, Somerset. Crews then made up for assistance from Weymouth Fire Station (2), Blandford, Poole, Sturminster Newton, Wimborne and Maiden Newton. At its peak there were 4 pumping appliances, 4 heavy off road appliances, 2 4x4 landrovers, a water carrier and a command support unit in attendance, along with the necessary officers required to deal with an incident of this size. The field measured approximately 15 acres and had multiple seats of fire involving standing corn. 1 small shed was also involved in the fire. Crews worked hard to prevent the fire from spreading to a neighbouring field and had the fire surrounded by 16:56. The fire was extinguished using 4 hose reels and the capabilities of the 4x4 off road vehicles. The electricity board also attended to ensure the electricity power lines were all safe
